Does the Mac recognise USB things when they're plugged in? Windows
PC's using XP onwards do. I tried the 'GPSU' program via a serial to
USB converter, and my eTrexH was recognised immediately.

Yes, but they don't go "b'DING". If some software is set to autolaunch
when a certain device is plugged in, it will do so - otherwise
there'll be nothing visible.

You can look in System Profiler, Hardware, USB. It's in
Applications/Utilities, or Apple/About This Mac/More Info, or
Apple/(hold Alt)System Profiler.

If it doesn't show up there then it's not being recognised. But! in
this case it'll be the USB-serial adapter that shows up, not the
Garmin.
