I've always done it that way without any problems. Mind you, make sure you
keep a copy of the original!

Chris any advice/tips on how you do it so I head in the right direction and
only change the correct 'files'.

In AW 6.0 I used to do the following.

1. Make a backup of runa6w32.exe (so that you can restore it should anything
go wrong).
2. Open runa6w32.exe in Axialis AX-Icons and modify the first 4 icons in the
file as required (making sure you change all variants of colour/resolution).
3. Package as normal, your resulting exe should have the modified icons.

You can also look at IconFX at http://icofx.ro/index.html is it allows you to
create the icons and modify the entire group of icons at once. The best thing
is it is free.
