The Register did a recent group test of desktop colour lasers. The one
that came out best was the Xerox Phaser 6125. Can be had for about 150
quid. Had the lowest running costs of the 6 printers they tested.

Ah. Much obliged.

I've been using and Epson C2800 for a long time - my main printer on the
LAN. Works well with Mac Mini and MBP as well as the Windows variants.
It cost me 245 GBP. Colour quality is very good particularly on
semi-glossy paper (although not quite as bright as an inkjet when
compared side by side).

The cartridges are expensive but they last a long time - still on my
first ones. I think they each have their own drums.

It is *big

A lot depends on how much you print and what type of printing you do. I
bought an HP CP1515 about a year ago and it's been absolutely trouble-free.
It's networked, so just install and forget. - it just worked.

The carts that came with it were about half full, I think and lasted for
about 8-9 mths with light home use: homework for girls (essays, reports
etc), and the odd invoice when I'm working from home. A new set was an
eye-watering 200+, but should last at least 18 mths with our usage pattern.

Photo quality is surprisingly good for a laser, even on plain paper; though
it can't match an inkjet on photo-quality paper, it's more than good enough
for reports with embedded pics.

I have the similar Xerox Phaser 6130 and am very happy with it so far.
When I got it (www.printerbase.co.uk) there were big discounts on the
6125 but no OSX drivers.
