Recommendations for a good cheap laser printer. And how long the
cartridges last and what they cost.

Anything decent for under 200?

Assuming you mean a monochrome laser...

For some four years or maybe a bit more, I've been using a HP 1022.
Always worked really well, reliable, very quick starting, decent
throughput. Replacement carts; pattern around 25, HP around 60.

They've been replaced now by the P1000 and the P1500 series. If they're
anything like their predecessors, they should be good useful printers.
As for HP'd evil reputation for software, the 1022 installed easily on
three Macs, no problems or glitches. But for a low cost mono laser,
what's to go wrong?

I have found the cheapest one to run, which gives tolerable quality, is
the HP 4500 / Canon CLPB460PS, but that is now a long-obsolete model.
In general my past experience of Canons was that they were the cheapest
to run, even if they cost a bit more to start with. Perhaps someone
with more up-to-date knowledge will be able to tell you if that is still
the case.

Some of the much older printers which used loose toner powder were even
cheaper per page, but were a nightmare to service and gave poor colour
graduation (however, they were fine for gaudy poster work).

An old LJ5 or similar from fleaBay. Seriously. Dirt cheap, bomb-proof.

Er, no, colour.
