Wait a minute. We're getting somewhere. When I use the above combination,
the desktop gets a bit smaller and I can rotate it around it's axle. But it
remains a flat screen that I can spin around it's axle: no cube with
multiple images of screens yet.

Hi
Gnome/Compix and KDE4/Kwin I think by default Kwin doesn't enable all
the bells and whistles, you need to configure via the Desktop Settings.

go to the settings to adjust ;-)
Go to "start" - systemsettings - desktop - desktopeffects (under KDE4)

Make sure you have more than one desktop defined in
Configure Desktop->Desktop->Multiple Desktops, use 4 if you want one
desktop
per side of the cube
