It's the steps needed to build up Linux/GNU from the pool of components that already exists. It's the way everyone had to operate before whoever came along and made the first distribution. Unless you want to do the work, you use one of the distributions, and live with the choices they make for you. The maintainer is also frequently presence on his Absolute forum. Not only is it lightweight, but it can easily be tied down into being an easy to use "web/email/etc" computer for grandma.

I may look again. nb

Mmm... It's interesting to read the other language wikipedias on SLS. The English and German wikipedias mention that Slackware was started to fix bugs in SLS, all the other pages mention that SLS made itself impopular because it switched its executable format from a.out to ELF...[1] Also interesting to see is the fact that the Russian page is by far the longest. J. PS: If I'm completely honest, I like the name "Softlanding Linux System" better than "Slackware"... :-/ Footnotes: [1] Well, the Spanish, French, Italian, Dutch and Portuguese pages do. The Polish and Russian pages mention something about a.out and ELF, but since I can't read nor decipher those languages, who knows what they're saying... ;-) -- Joost Kremers joostkremers(a)yahoo.com Selbst in die Unterwelt dringt durch Spalten Licht EN:SiS(9) |
