If you mean /dev, I still have one. And despite the fact I see no /dev/sda's, apparently it's still there, somewhere, or something is. Since I'm running fluxbox, I get no auto mount and MUST do it manually (which would lead me to believe auto-mounts are a function at the wm layer). So, when I plug in my thumb drive and invoke: mount -t vfat /dev/sda1 /mnt/key ....it works flawlessly, just like it always has. Perhaps I misunderstand the question/issue. nb

Ahh so. Thank you for clarifying, Joost. ;) nb

Left KDE after many years of use. 2. Install my favorite apps on the kicker bar (not possible with e.g., Scribus and KDE4.) 3. Reconfigure text editor to call Gvim instead of the standard XFCE text editor. 4. Reconfigure the terminal button to call Konsole. Bookmarks and choice of color scheme. 5. Add Kmail to the kicker bar. 6. Copy old email files over. 7. Recreate email filters one at a time. 8. Copy overnight Bogofilter scripts. 9. Diddle with xorg.conf to get 1280 x 1024 added to choices. 10. Run script to get latest Scribus. Qt 4.5 libs help. 11. Install Vector Linux on another partition to get Inkscape 46. Still don't have Inkscape 47. (etc.) John Culleton
