I was a bit pissed when Verizon only allowed the "big 5" usenet domains, and
then a few months later they dropped it altogether, while I had signed on
for a full 1 year commitment. But I found that I get reliable and complete
usenet access from www.teranews.com, for only a one-time $5 setup charge.
And they have a totally free server with a few restrictions.
