A mate bought a new HP All_in_one printer the other day and I had to download another CD's worth of stuff to install it on XP and Vista for him. I'd previously stuck Ubuntu on his sons lappy and that 'just found' and printed a nice test page with no need to add anything. I'm not sure if the network scanning function would be available but I didn't even look. > >I was also impressed that on this machine (not my last version), it did >set the resolution correctly. This is on ubuntu 64 bit version I'm more and more impressed with Ubuntu as I go along. I'm now generally able (often with a bit of Googling) to fix those odd things that don't happen to work off the bat. In fact I often offer it (even if only dual booting in or with their Windows) as their default OS, especially if they only use their machines for Farcebork and the like. I do sometimes get the follow up call ... "can we set the default to Windows because ... " but they do seem genuinely happy with Ubuntu for the basic stuff (not to say it won't do the complex stuff as well etc). I'm about to Upgrade an elderly neighbours machine from W98 and apart from the odd Windows only board / card game she's bought (that you can probably find free under Linux anyway) I'm pretty sure Ubuntu would do her fine. I might stick a second box in there with a KVM switch and see how she goes, till she decides either way. I guess I could even give her a W98 VM at the same time but I'm not sure if that would be a step too soon! Cheers, T i m |
