PHY initialization Hello my question is rather general - does an Ethernet PHY chip require any additional initialization upon hardware reset or it is always platform specific? I'm asking this because I'm having a problem reading/writing registers of PHY chip from my code; the chip is wired to a ethernet SoC via S3MII bus. I j... 23 Mar 2010 18:18
malloc/free algorithms Hi, Quasi-deterministic malloc/free implementations tend to be inefficient (i.e., wasteful of resources). But, I wonder if dynamic changes to the algorithms used by malloc/free can be exploited to provide *application specific* deterministic behavior in certain contexts. E.g., implement malloc(3) more like:... 25 Feb 2010 14:48
Why a file system required in an embedded Device Hi, I have this question in mind, Why do we need a file system as part of any RTOS when it is intended for a target embedded device(Low memory and less storage of data). I can imagine a system having lots of data managed in terms of files in need of File system but probably not many embedded devices store that amo... 24 Feb 2010 18:50
USB Enumeration problem I have a USB device (development board with firmware) that I connect to using Hyperterminal (or Tera Term). When I power the device, connect it to the PC and bring up Hyperterminal, all is good. It enumerates and I can connect. At this point, if I cycle power on the device, after it comes up Hyperterminal will not... 24 Feb 2010 05:19
*Exclusive* use of zero-copy semantics in RTOS Hi, I'm writing another multimedia RTOS and looking through the code I've written that *used* other such beasts in the past (wise move, eh? :> ). It seems like moving zero-copy semantics *formally* into the RTOS's contract should help improve application robustness -- instead of relying on ad-hoc implementa... 23 Feb 2010 14:41
Opinions re: MCU vendors [long] "D Yuniskis" wrote... You want better. I agree. And they are in a far better position to spread out the costs of producing more complete Exactly. AND THIS IS THEIR PRODUCT (i.e., the documentation) JUST LIKE THE SILICON ITSELF! Well-said! ... 22 Feb 2010 16:23
Cortex-M4 with DSP instructions and Floating point announced by ARM Hi, thought this might be interesting for those that are using ARM in MCU related applications. They are continuing to upgrade their cores and making it more difficult to not use ARM :-) Saw it here while browsing. http://mcu-related.com/ An Schwob ... 22 Mar 2010 00:21
Is Zilog still in business? Is ZILOG still in business? they don't answer tech support phone calls or return emails. My rep from Future Electronics distributor says "not recommended" and do not use them ... 4 Mar 2010 12:18
ARM9 TCP/IP Stack Hey y'all -- I'm throwing this post out on behalf of my poor beleagured programmer. We're starting to migrate over our new designs from using the Lantronix XPort for our network needs to an ARM9 with an onboard MAC (NXP LPC3250) and handling the network in software. The goals is going to be to keep things smal... 23 Feb 2010 11:15
