I am getting an end of file error with Speed Disk when my Firewire hard
drive is connected to my Blue and White G3, and am unable to defrag it.
Any suggestions? I am using Norton Utilities 6.

get rid of norton as fast as possible.

version 6 is *old*. you don't say what version of mac os you're running
but it may not be compatible anymore. there is no need to defragment
either.

get diskwarrior and fix the damage that norton likely caused, before
it's too late.

You didn't say what version Mac OS you're using. If you are using Mac OS
X, there's little or no reason to optimize / defragment your hard drive.

Subject line says Mac OS 9.2. As far as I recall, Norton Utilities 6 is
compatible with Mac OS 9, but I have been avoiding all Norton products
for so long I can't be certain.
