Hello,

Is it possible to build an architecture that has an Exchange edge server in
a DMZ that communicates with the Exchange server on SBS 2008? If so, what
does the licensing look like for that? Do you need to purchase additional
licenses or Exchange software for the edge server?

Thank you,

As far as non-SBS 2008, yes no problem, and the licensing is part of your
own licensing, since the server is not hosting mailboxes, and is just acting
as a 'relay.' However, I have not set it up on SBS 2008 yet. I can provide
you details with configuring it in a non-SBS environment, which I posted
below to just give you an idea of what the layout would look like and what
to expect. Possibly someone else with SBS 2008 specific experience setting
it up can comment better if the SBS wizards are involved or not.

You'd need a license for Exchange 2007 and separate Exchange CALs for this.
I don't think SBS 2008 is designed to work in this fashion....it is not
going to buy you much anyway. If you need enterprise-level topology then SBS
is not the product for you.

I thought Exchange 2007 on SBS 2008 allows setting up an Edge?

Maybe it does, but it ain't included and would be pricey. I really don't see
the point in a single Exchange server environment. Same with FE/BE in E2003
and prior ... unless you need to serve OWA for multiple backend servers, not
worth the bother.
