I wish you could explain *how* you do this. I use Hogwasher and I've never
managed to do anything except very basic filtering on the 'Subject' line.

The filtering window under the [Criteria] tab gives a number of choices which
include 'Newsgroups Header'. I've tried to filter out posts to specific
groups using this criteria, also the 'more than' option but neither seem to
work. The only filter that *does* work, as I said, is excluding subject lines
with specific keywords in.

What am I missing?

Use the 'Internet Header' criteria. Expect a delay while the system runs
through all downloaded headers looking for matches.

For example, if I wanted to flag all posts made with the Hog, I'd do the
following:

1 press shift-command-S

2 set the time and the newsgroup in the 'General' pane.

3 in the 'Criteria' pane, select 'Internet Headers' and type or paste in the
relevant header. In this case, 'User-Agent: Hogwasher/4.3'. Or I could just
use 'Hogwasher'.

4 in the 'Action' pane, select what I want to do (mark for download, flag
with a colour, whatever)

5 finish up as usual.

It's easier to do that kind of thing in MT-NW, as you can score the various
posts, and you have a lot more colours that can be applied, and you don't
have to wait while the system checks out the headers as MT-NW doesn't apply
new filters until you either reload the newsgroup or select refilter. On the
other hand, the Hog makes it a _lot_ easier to drop stuff into the proper
place, as you can specify where you want something to be downloaded as part
of the filter. The ideal NNTP client would combine the features from both
MT-NW and the Hog. Forte Agent has a lot of filtering options, and comes
close to combining the features of MT-NW and the Hog, but it's a _Windows_
app so I'd have to be running Windows to use it, which I'd rather not do.

There are some major features missing in Unison:
* like MacSOUP and MT-NewsWatcher and even Thunderbird navigating the
newsgroups using the spacebar is not possible with Unison.
* filtering on ANY header is missing.
* auto refresh the subscribed newsgroups (check for new messages) and
display the unread messages beside the groups.
* Reply-To-Me function like in MacSOUP: when there is a reply too your
posting, MacSOUP displays this in the groupslist.
* etc...

OK thanks - I've had another go and yes, your specific example does work.
Also I think, any other filters I try using the 'Internet Headers' criterion.

What doesn't work with my setup is any filter I try to set using the
'Newsgroups Header' criterion. I've tried to set filters to cut out posts
with 'More than' n cross-posts, and also those with cross-posts to specific
newsgroups. These just don't seem to work at all.

[SNIP]

I found that by using the overview setting you can scroll through
messages one page at a time, as well as skipping to the next message
with the space bar. But you can't skip to the next unread group that
way. I wish you could.
