From: "Gregg Hill" greggmhill at please do not spam me at yahoo dot on 22 Feb 2010 14:32 Yes, it is, but the problem is that the "same" is much slower than it should be, and much slower than the Core or higher units. Gregg -- Gregg's pet peeves: First of all, what does a peeve look like, and why would anyone want one as a pet? Peeve #1: Apostrophes: when in doubt, leave them out! You will be correct more often than not. Its = Belonging to it. For example, "Look at the sky. Its color is blue." It's = It is. For example, "It's hot today." It's = It has. For example, "It's been nice talking to you." Its' = completely incorrect usage. Stop it! Peeve #2: Your vs. You're "Your" means belonging to you, as in, "It's your truck." "You're" means "You are." Example, you're probably about ready to throttle me for this peeve! The x550e is the minimum unit I purchase for shops with less than 20 internet users, the x750e is my standard firewall for under 100 internet users - the X1250e is for groups of 100+ or a company with more than 10 site-site VPN's (in my opinion) -- You can't trust your best friends, your five senses, only the little voice inside you that most civilians don't even hear -- Listen to that. From: "Gregg Hill" greggmhill at please do not spam me at yahoo dot on 22 Feb 2010 20:19 Leythos, While maybe not clear, that is what I meant by "WatchGuard with XTM subscription." Yes, the bundle is the best way to go. Unfortunately, I can't get small clients to bite on an X550e, so the Edge price range is all they may consider. In my testing, the Edge units suffer a huge hit when downloading via a proxy with AV, etc, enabled, while the X550e is a negligible hit. A few years ago, SonicWALL's TZ 170 would max at 2.5Mbps down on a 10Mbps line, then their TZ 180 came out and only did 5Mbps. I complained a LOT and they kept saying it was the hardware, but then they came out with a different firmware ("reassembly free" or something like that) that produced near line-speed downloads. If only WG could do that, I'd be able to sell more of them. I can't recommend an X550e to a SOHO or small office that has no server room due to the noise level. I love the granularity of the WG and the ease of setup. Spam filtering is awesome! Gregg Hill -- Gregg's pet peeves: First of all, what does a peeve look like, and why would anyone want one as a pet? Yep, I only use the Edge units without the UTM products, as a advanced NAT router. > A few years ago, SonicWALL's TZ 170 would max at > 2.5Mbps down on a 10Mbps line, then their TZ 180 came out and only did > 5Mbps. Generally, there is a phone demark location, and we normally wall mount the firewall there and add a 750VA UPS for it - then the cables run to a switch at the office hub location. Noise is not a problem if you can do it that way - there is almost always a closet or utility room area where the phone panels are located. > I love the granularity of the WG and the ease of setup. Spam filtering > is awesome! I just wish that renewals for UTM/LSS were cheaper, my x1250e is going to set me back $1,600 to renew it for 1 year... The same UTM/LSS renewal is about $500 for the x550e.... -- You can't trust your best friends, your five senses, only the little voice inside you that most civilians don't even hear -- Listen to that. From: Gary D on 23 Feb 2010 10:53 Thanks for info Cris. I completed the "contact us for pricing" section on their web site and have STILL not had any pricing back. However, a Watchguard reseller has responded with pricing for their EDGE products which appear to do the job also. I would be grateful if you could send me any pricing, if Calyptics is good enough for MVP's its good enough for me. Hi All, Can anybody recommend a firewall/router that has the ability to URL/WEB filter based on active directory (using LDAP ???) to use with my sbs 2008 prem. (I Want to avoid ISA !) I have previously used Draytek 2820n but I believe URL filtering on these cant be done on a IP/user/group, it is a global setting. TIA Gary D
