From: Tuxedo on 5 Feb 2010 08:20 Hi, I use Slackware 12.2 and just installed the Google Chrome browser from one of the known repositories (slacky.it I think) but experienced the following error when trying to start the browser: /usr/bin/google-chrome: error while loading shared libraries: libgconf-2.so.4: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory Is this a knows issue? I couldn't find this particular library as slackware .tgz installation bundle. Does anyone know if it exists anywhere? Many thanks, Tuxedo

Google Chrome now works fine after installing orbit2.x and thereafter gconf-2.x, although there are some errors, but they only appear to be unimportant some internal browser related debugging messages rather than any system dependency errors (included below). I like Google Chrome as start up takes only fraction of a second :-) Tuxedo 3411:3411:31923768938:ERROR:/b/slave/chrome-official-linux/build/src/chrome/browser/google_update_settings_linux.cc(60)] Not implemented reached in static bool GoogleUpdateSettings::GetLanguage(std::wstring*) [3411:3411:31952007079:ERROR:/b/slave/chrome-official-linux/build/src/chrome/browser/search_engines/template_url_prepopulate_data.cc(2788)] Not implemented reached in int<unnamed>::GetCurrentCountryID() [3411:3411:31958822355:ERROR:/b/slave/chrome-official-linux/build/src/chrome/browser/browser_init.cc(361)] Not implemented reached in GURL<unnamed>::GetWelcomePageURL() [3411:3411:31959041982:ERROR:/b/slave/chrome-official-linux/build/src/net/proxy/proxy_config_service_linux.cc(558)] Not implemented reached in void net::ProxyConfigServiceLinux::Delegate::SetupAndFetchInitialConfig(MessageLoop*, MessageLoop*)Bug 17363: obey KDE proxy settings.

Options in the "Under the Hood" section include "Enable phishing and malware protection and various "Privacy" functions to "improve browsing experience". That said, generally I tend to trust Google in thinking their philosophy in doing the right thing still holds true. That said, it's still not my default browser. Tuxedo |
