Hello all,

I need some help if someone has the time and knowledge to do so. I have a
SBS 2003 Server, and Monday I came into work and the server had locked up,
(crashed). I restarted only to find out the Raid 1 array that I had created
has been lost and degraded. One of my HDD's failed. This shouldn't be a
problem, I have dealt with this is the past on other pc's with onboard raid
controllers, and have always been able to boot with a failed raid 1 array,
but this time is different. It says "Error Loading Operating System". I can
turn off raid in the bios, and boot into safe mode on one of the drives, but
then it just restarts. I have a back up on another drive, but I would really
like to get this drive to boot again. The problem I have is that it is not
telling me what's wrong; it just says "Error loading operation system".

The only thing that I remember as far as information you may need when I
installed SBS 03 5 years ago, I used a Asus P4c800-D Deluxe Motherboard, and
it used a Ich5R raid controller. I remember having to switch to "Dynamic
Disk" in order to fully install SBS 03. Another really odd thing, I took the
drive out that is kind of bootable, and hooked it up to a XP machine, and it
only shows that the drive is around 1GB in total size when it is around 160GB
in total size.

I'm not sure if I should do a chk disk for fear I may mess that drive up
even more. There is some data on that drive that I would really, really like
to get off, or better yet have it bootable again. I can always rebuild the
array later.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!!

Hi,

Can you do a restart (F8 Disable restart on system failure) and tell us the
bluescreen code.

Most likely even though it is booting off the second drive it doesnt know
about anything on the first drive

Can you post the contents of Boot.ini (boot off a recovery/winPE disk)

If you can check that the HDD is in position 0 (primary master), and then
try it in position 1 (primary slave)

What type of drives are they , scsi , sata, ide?

Regards

Matt

Hello again,

Very sorry for the long delay, It has been a rough few days since the
server has went down. Anyway, here is what I found out:

When I Disable restart on the system failure, The blue screen code I get is
this:

STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF78A2A94, 0XC0000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000

If I take the drive that is ok and hook it up to a XP machine, I did find a
lot of Information, in fact about 72GB which is what I think I had on that
drive. I Cant however get the other drive to show up in windows. Just the
bios and device manager. That must be due to the Dynamic Disk that I set up.
You will have to excuse me, I am not very informed about Dynamic Disk's and
how they work, but it just looks like one disk is usable, and other other is
not right now. What I dont understand is that somehow both disk's must be
damaged in some way, because either one will not boot. It just shows in the
Raid Bios that Raid is Degraded, and one drive has failed, but the other is
bootable. It does not however boot though. I had a UPS attached to the
Server, and I thought that this Raid 1 (Mirrored) Array would be enough
redundancy for what we use it for. About 26 Workstations attached to it.

I did try and switch from Primary Master and Save positions, and it made no
difference. The drives are SATA 1.5 Drives. Maxtor in fact.

One more thing, how do you get the contents of the Boot.Ini file from a Boot
Disk? Thank you again for your time, and again, sorry for the delay...

Do you have a full backup of the server?
