If the phone is locked is locked not matter which firmware you use, there is way of flashing the Orange Hero to a certain Modaco rom which I think is termed rooting, its a tricky to follow procedure but would allow me to unlock the phone with a code which may not work with the Orange ROM. I am hoping the latest Orange ROM allows unlocking as some people have suggested certainly they have unlocked their phones without rooting. Once you unlock the phone it stays unlocked no matter which firmware you use.

Can you point me to the right place as cannot find it. As far as I was aware you had to buy an unlock code then enter it when you put a SIM other then Orange in and if it was either the latest ROM or the Modaco Custom Rom it would successfully unlock the phone. If it was the older Orange ROM it would hand whilst unlocking the phone and therefore not unlock it.

This is the site I looked at which said you cannot unlock a Hero for free http://www.foneszone.co.uk/unlock/how_to/HTC/Hero.php
