From: Andrew Hodgson on 6 May 2010 12:05 Hi, Just wondering what people are buying these days - currently using a Dim9200 which works fine on Win7, but want to have a quieter system. I want at least I7 processor with 8GB RAM. Good sound would be nice, not bothered if it uses onboard Intel video. Would like to get solid state storage if possible, most of my files are now on the WHS box anyway. Anything out there from Dell worth looking at? Thanks. Andrew.

If all you want is "a quieter system" you don't need a new computer. Just replace the case fans and use a video card with a heat sink. We can help you choose both. On the other hand, if what you really want is a new computer you can't expect good advice if you don't tell people how you intend to use the computer. If you feel you need "at least I7 processor with 8GB RAM" you must be a software developer or someone who routinely works with huge databases (commodities trader?), or perhaps you're into Visio or CAD. You're obviously not interested in HD video editing or Photoshop or 3D games, since you're "not bothered if it uses onboard Intel video". Anything else to share? Daddy

I want to use Vmware workstation on it extensively for the most part to test various servers etc. Other than that it is general Internet/email/music stuff. Andrew.

For extensive use of Wmware Workstation, I would look first at the Precision Workstations: http://www.dell.com/us/en/business/desktops/precndt/ct.aspx?refid=precndt&s=bsd&cs=04 However, most of those computers come with Xenon processors and video cards. If you really want Core i7, and you're sure you don't want a video card, look at the Optiplex desktops: http://www.dell.com/us/en/business/desktops/optiplex/ct.aspx?refid=optix&s=bsd&cs=04 For Internet, e-mail, music and web surfing you need nothing more than Inspiron in a desktop: http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/inspndt/ct.aspx?refid=inspndt&s=dhs&cs=19&ref=dthp Sorry, I can't advise you on laptops.
