Just tried it by connecting the ethernet from my Macbook to the
ethernet hub that comes out of the dsl modem that comes out of
the tiger g4. All was going swimmingly - amazingly (I go fed up
of reading about it on the internet and thought to just try it)
and then the first real hurdle:

Do I tick Applications? I know there is trouble if I ever try
some of them on my MB since they won't work on Intel and SL...
but if I don't tick this, will the settings and accounts on them
not come across? Anyway, I left it ticked.

And then the impossible condition happened, it was seemingly
happily migrating all (I later found out: to a separate folder on
the MB) but that it would take 18.5 hours! That is a long time!

Any way of speeding things up. Would it be *much much quicker* if
I disconnected G4 from internet and connected the ethernet
directly from MB to G4? But would it still take hours on end.

Sounds like manual transfer (by inspection and typing) might be
simpler?

Has anyone any actual experience of this particular situation or
very very similar?

Gee, I thought that was a given! Mine is a Macbook Pro Intel and I
have a couple peripherals that only connect via Firewire.

There are articles on why all this might be... theories ranging
from cost cutting to make an Mac model cheaper to indictions of a
future for USB (it being very popular in the non-Mac world and
something about USB 3 coming along). Buggered if I know. I liked
the white keyboard of my Macbook and it was cheaper because I
wanted more memory and bigger disk more than I wanted FW. But
perhaps I was a little stingy and precious. Anyway I have it and
will use it (its bloody heavy! I am very weak you see, ever see a
Borrower?)

You probably don't need to transfer applications, just the accounts.
Then download and install the third-party applications you use fresh.

Yes, that is definitely my intention when I next try this. In
fact I suggested it to an Apple "expert" over my newly installed
skype on the MB (what an incredible thing!) The Apple number
happened to be the *only* number there in a panel (as a default,
bedsides a testing skype voice service).

So I tried it and a real American came on the line! Naturally I
could not tell him I was just testing skype so I blathered on
about Migration Assistant and he agreed about the apps, and also
agreed with the idea that if I connected ethernet directly from
MB to G4 it would be quicker, but said it was still slow! I will
try it as an overnight thing.
