I've kind of given up. My gut feeling is that the approach I took (to
stsadm -o import) needed the existing companyweb to have some
preparation work applied to it so the import is successful.
Unfortunately, I found some of the problems after adding content to
companyweb on the bew server, so I am a bit stuck with the problem
where I need to view some content in the Explorer view. I am not
confident in trying other things to import the old sharepoint data now
the destination has additional content.

I was forced down this route as the stsadm -o backup / stsadm -o
restore produced an odd error due to a version difference between my
two servers. I assumed that a database move would not work due to the
problem with the backup / restore option.

...now living with it.
