Because the memory controller changed with the Nehalem processors used
in the 2009 models.

It turns out I haven't. I added a pair of 2 GB DIMMs and made the
mistake of trusting _my_ memory when I posted instead of looking it up.

And that suggests what the OP's problem may be.

Mine didn't say that. However, perhaps one might need 4gig in slot 1,
leave slot 2 empty, and then put 1gig in slots 3 and 4. Putting 1gig in
slot 2 would have unequal memory in slots 1 and 2.
