Aha! you topped for wasting CPU cycles, disk IO and bandwidth ;)

Oh, I don't know -- wouldn't installing gnome or kde result in a
list 3 times that size? :)

I thought I'd give it a whirl, so booted off dvd to try the live version.

Not good omens.

First try on a laptop - 'trap 12' error. Web site says to unplug all
devices and try again: difficult for a laptop!

Second try on a desktop. Monitor goes into 'unsupported mode' mode, so
no graphics visible; switching back to the text console shows an
apparently interminable screen of incomprehensible error messages. I
gave up.

DVD now in storage.... Maybe 8.1 will be better; meanwhile, I /know/
crunchbang linux works on the laptop (and the same desktop, come to
that). So it surely can't be that hard!!

Sorry to hear that. Though I enjoy using straight FBSD it would be really
nice to have a variant aimed at the "normal user" community that Just
Works (IMO that would be much better than burdening FBSD with such
requirements).

The user-friendly Linux distros do represent a huge developer effort, so
it really isn't as easy as you might imagine.

So was I. I have fbsd (6.something) running as a server. Very stable and
reliable (apart from updating the ports :-} ). I've been trying off and
on for some time to get fbsd up and usable as a desktop machine to
replace XP. For all its faults, XP does just, more or less, work without
hassle. Ubuntu is pretty close, but with a few silly problems like
issues with hibernation and shutdown. I had high hopes of pcbsd, now
somewhat shattered. But I do want to avoid a proliferation of OS's!

Overall, not easy. But something fundamental like a fatal fault when
booting shouldn't be too hard to avoid. If a machine comes up at all,
you can usually at least try something with it; if booting fails,
well...... But I may take another look when I have some time (or 8.1
appears; .0 versions are always dubious!)
