Apparently during the install/upgrade process Debian
wants to me to pay for an internet connection, which it
will use to 'connect to it's site'.

This is worse than Micro$loth!
Although I've bought the 5 DVDs, it wants to take control
of my computer and internet connection, right from the start.

You heard about the ex-soviet software that dialed your modem
to the soviet-union, and milked-off the soviet-side telco costs?

Apparently? I do not know of any Linux doing this. Now it may be looking
for upgrades, but that is up to you if you want the upgrades. Just say
no, and continue.

Yes, we notice that you are upset. Instead of just ranting, it would be
more helpful if you actually told us exatly what happened to someone
could give you advise. Or you can rant and be ignored.

Any internet connection is optional and used for updates and upgrades.
If you don't want Debian to connect to the Internet then skip that
portion of the install.

If your copy is demanding the use of a specific ISP, or phone number, I
would suspect the copy of your install DVD's. Where did you obtain
them, was the dealer a reputable dealer?

Good Luck

is there a reason to start a new thread? a couple of people, including me,
were trying to help you past the internet connection throttle in another
thread. <hki4gr$qvh$1(a)news.eternal-september.org>

you got good advice from J. G. Miller and Mumia W. you haven't responded
to their tips but I gather you are still having trouble. what went wrong?

IMO, this troll's looking for an argument, not a tip.
