Erm, no. The ZIP+4 is to help with sorting *inside* the zip code, not cause people ran out of zip codes. E formerly of 94040, 10964, 02543, 04843 and 04848

They also didn't use to force you to prefix long distance calls with a 1, but they do that now to increase the number of area codes. I must say I found their system better - all local numbers 7 digits, with 3 extra digits for long distance. Rather better than ours with local numbers of 8, 7, 6 and I believe still 5 digits in some places. (Formerly of 94025 and 415). -- tim

I lived there during the 650 split, as well as the LA split of 213/310. The 650 split was not happy, since with all the companies in Sili Valley, they all had to change their letterhead, etc. But for some it at least is still seen as a badge of honor. Of course, most of those companies have since gone under. Up until a few years ago, where my parents live, all you had to dial was the last 4 digits of the phone number and it would go through.
