From: john on 9 Apr 2010 10:36 My reaction to KDE4 was so negative that after a decade or more of use of KDE I switched to XFCE. But others obviously have other views. So I ask the general question, what GUI do you currently run? And why? John Culleton

(I do most tasks in plain old text mode.) -- We were electrocute.

I did not like KDE 4.2, so I built 4.3.4 (or one of those versions) and it works OK. One needs to 'get under the hood' to set up the desktop the way you want it. I'll probably upgrade all of the machines to slack 13.1 when it comes out... moving it to this laptop last... I've run KDE for maybe 10 years... Liked it better than Gnome. Fast, light, minimal, predictable, exportable, easy for newbies on my LAN (including easily locking down things they can fiddle with), with no function loss (that I've ever experienced). I could probably install it on my kettle, and I have all my apps, custom fastkeys, and custom themes setup how I like things, in just a few small text config files. The wifey likes Xfce4, but its a bit bloated and fiddly for my taste. ;) -- *=( http://www.thedailymash.co.uk/ *=( For all your UK news needs.

Still on 12.2 on my main (this) box w/KDE3, but have 13.0 on others, and KDE4 got flushed after a single day of use. XFCE is nice, I've used blackbox on lesser harwdare in the past, liked it as well. I really like Konqueror, but Thunar has come a long way since I last used it. KDE4.x has just become a big, slow monster that I can't be bothered to tame. -- Slackware 12.2, 2.6.27.7, Core i7 920, GeForce 8400 GS RLU #272755
