Hi we have SBS 2003 SP2, but am having a problem with MMC 3.0 and the POP3
snap-in it keeps crashing. There is a Knowledge Base Article KB921096, and
it mentions the exact problem and that there is an update for it BUT it
mentions that it is for those with SBS SP1 and R2 and that is it. The update
doesnt come up of for me and even when I download it from the catalog it
doesn't work. I really dont want to have to uninstall SP1 and I am not even
sure if that will fix it but I dont understand why they only have it for
those two groups obviously it affects others as well. Any help would be
appreciated it is very frustrating.

I believe it affects WIndows 2003 SP2 installs as well:

Getting the error "MMC has detected an error in snap-in"?

SBS 2003 sp2 is merely Windows 2003 sp2.

If your system is still on Windows update and you haven't flipped it
over to Microsoft update you won't see it.

Have you truly installed, or is this a post SBS 2003 sp1 or R2 box so
you have all the other parts leading up to Windows 2003 sp2?

Dear all,

Sorry for my intrusion, but the poster seems to experience the same problems
as me, with almost the same system specs.

I've went through many a forum, but the problems seems to remain.

I've downloaded the kb921096 and placed it into a subfolder. From there when
started, the update cancels the install, mentioning an error that 'this
update is part of an already installed SP, or I do not have the appropriate
SP installed for this update' (might be slightly different, as this is
translated from Dutch).

The install of the update is halted, and the error in the MMC remains.

All of the settings of the POP3 connectors that are already saved are
preserved, but any changes I make cannot be saved due to this error. New
mailboxes that need to be filtered in my global routing rules cannot be
changed.

Is there another way to apply the hotfix (that according to many users on
other forums DOES work, just not with me).

Any troubleshooting tips are greatly appreciated in advance,

Thanks,

Gerard

Hi Gerard,

Thank you for posting here.

From your post, I understand that you also encountered the POP3 Connector
error described in KB921096. However, the update cannot be installed due to
some other error message.

Before we go any further, I would appreciate your help in clarifying the
following questions:

1. What's the system version and Service Pack level?
2. When did this issue begin to occur? Have any hardware or software
changes been made recently?
3. Is the error message the following? Does this issue persist if we select
the third option?

"MMC has detected an error in a snap-in, it is recommended that you shut
down and restart MMC

O Report this error to Microsoft, and then shut down MMC
O Continue running and ignore errors with this snap-in for the rest of the
session
O Continue running and always ignore errors with this snap-in, regardless
of user or session"

To check the installation process of KB921096, please help me collect the
following log files for further research:

1. KB921096.log
---------------
1. Click Start->Run, type "%windir%" without quotation marks and press
Enter.
2. Locate a file named KB921096.log

2. MPS report
---------------
a. Please download the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE from the following link and
then run this tool to gather some information from the problematic computer:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd9
15706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE

b. Double-click on the MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE file. [Note] This process may
take some time; however, it will not have a negative effect on the
performance.
c. A CAB file will be generated in the
%systemroot%\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\Cab directory
called%COMPUTERNAME%_MPSReports.CAB. The CAB file will contain the reports
generated by the MPS Reporting Tool.

You can zip these log files and send them as attachments to my mailbox
v-shshao(a)microsoft.com

I am looking forward to your feedback.

Best regards,

Shawn Shao
