From: Mats Weber on 11 Apr 2010 08:01 Hello, I have a MacBook Pro 15" (late 2008, the version just before the long lasting battery) with Mac OS 10.6.3 and all the latest updates. It works fine most of the time, except that from time to time, it freezes for 30 seconds or so (sometimes less, sometimes more). The freeze seems to be related to hard disk activity because everything that does not need disk access (like magnifying icons in the dock) keeps working. The problem has survived a complete reinstall as well as cloning the system from another perfectly working Mac. Has anybody else experienced the problem and found a solution ? Thanks

Check Disk Utility and the Console to see if your drive is logging errors. -- May all your good dreams and fine wishes come true! May joy be yours all the days of your life!

Then it's hardware. And it's probably the hard drive. Steve

Stop what you are doing immediately and back up everything you value from that hard drive. 2. If you want to verify that hard drive errors are the cause of the freezes, open the /var/log/system.log file (you'll need to be administrator), and look for any disk or I/O errors in the log. 3. Boot the computer on the Mac OS X install DVD, and look in the installer menu for Tools > Disk Utility. Run Disk Utility's "Verify Disk" command (not the "Verify Permissions" command) to see what problems it finds. -- Send responses to the relevant news group rather than email to me. I checked the logs. Nothing in system.log or any other log. Disk Utility says the disk is fine. No noises from the drive. |
