I'm pretty sure this is how I've always held mice as well, starting with
the single-button mouse that came with our first Mac SE.

Mac reports 50-60% with NiMHs.

Update: I got a second Magic Mouse today and the 2100mAh Imedions work on
that mouse and rate at 80%, after afew hours use it is down to 76%.
