Personally, I felt that Office 2003 was MS's last great Office suite. After that, there were more disadvantages introduced than advantages, including such as 2007. 2003 was better than the previous Office XP. After that it went downhill. But we are getting away from the concept of freeware. But, while we are off-topic for this group, I'll say that one of my favorite (and dated now) comparisons between word processors was written^1 in the time frame for office 2007, and compared it with OO version of that time 2007 June. That reviewer felt that the then current OO had taken the best features of MS Office 2003, so perhaps that is why I like the review. That reviewer also covered a lot of freeware against payware WPs - to bring us back on-topic. http://www.donationcoder.com/Reviews/Archive/WordProcs/ Welcome to the DonationCoder comprehensive review of Modern Word Processors. In part one we look at the majors players; in part two we try out the second-tier contenders; part three examines the online word processors challenging the desktop heavy hitters. -- Mike Easter

A freeware alternative to Publisher is Serif's PagePlus SE, see <http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/software/pageplus/>. Unfortunately it won't read MS Publisher files and, of course, it's a teaser to tempt you to pay up for the full version. Another freeware alternative is Scribus, see <http://www.scribus.net/>. Last time I played with it--some time ago--it was a bit buggy and not very feature-rich. -- Martin Jay

I think that is a about right. However, Excel 2010 has some really good formatting features. 2010 appears to be all about tabbed interfaces and connectivity, a lot of home users do not require in the pro versions. > That reviewer also covered a lot of freeware against payware WPs - to > bring us back on-topic. > http://www.donationcoder.com/Reviews/Archive/WordProcs/ Welcome to the > DonationCoder comprehensive review of Modern Word Processors. That's an extremely good review. Pity it will not allow me to connect to 'The Great Software List' hyperlink at the bottom of the article.

It's much cheaper. If you already own that, yes, I would if I owned it. I still use Office '95 (very rarely) and will do so until it gets totally broke - Haven't purchased MSO since then nor gone beyond XP either and MSO'95 still works on that ;-) > > Or maybe the group can recommend a new strategy using Open Office > and so forth? OpenOffice.org is currently the way of (my) future office suite requirements. It continues to improve and the lack of registration per PC suits me to a "T". -- dee
