After applying all of these patches, it seems that now suddenly when I reboot the machine, my firewire drive is now automatically mounted (zfs) on boot. Not sure which patch did it, but it's working now. Oh, I had also modified vold.conf to ignore the port that has the firewire drive attached. So far so good, at least with just one reboot test. I can't afford support and, as a hobbyist and former IT professional, I don't really need it! If something doesn't work as I expect, I have all the time in the world to fiddle with it! Keep in mind that Sun support comes in several flavors and that service contracts usually have a one year term.
