Plenty, but the reason for asking here is to get recommendations so that
I can try out ones that are well regarded and narrow down my choices as
much as possible until I have more experience in creating and editing
music with software.

Rosegarden is not a synthesizer though. Had you asked about sequencing
I would have enthusiastically recommended Rosegarden.
