Well, my subsequent downloads have continued to be exceedingly slow; as in
hours to download 4-5 groups with not much activity in any of them.

Probably a poor NNTP implementation. My guess is that there are gaps in
the article numbers, performing a "catchup" might tell your client to
stop looking in those gaps for older articles to appear.

I think that there are servers out of sync, and/or moderators are moving
messages at the time I am trying to download. I see this in a couple of "forums"
every so often. I resolve this in Agent by using Sample headers and bring down
the last 300 headers. There are maybe 30 new messages at the time.
