CPW try to stock unlocked standard GSM stock phones
to minimise their own stock keeping

If network branded then they'll also be network locked

You don't have to /use/ the obligatory SIM though. I recently bought a
new PAYG handest (plus £10 'credit') there and popped in the SIM from my
monthly-contract handset and it 'just worked' immediately. (Of course
I've changed the monthly contract to a 'SIM only' monthly one). The CPW
salesman selected the network with the cheapest initial top-up for the
obligatory SIM, which has never been unwrapped.

Yes, it was....

An easier solution - get an Asda PAYG - they even say on the box
that they are unlocked!

If you just want a simple dual-band phone, no frills, the Nokia
1208 at 17 takes some beating.

OK for a Orange OVP Virgin Sim if you can find one for transfer

But for only around a fiver more you could have a 3g ZTE 102
with all the usual 3g features, and stick a costing nothing off the shelf
Three Zero sim in it.
