From: Frank Hahn on 17 Sep 2009 23:24 (1) PROGRAM NAME: slrn (2) LINK: http://slrn.sourceforge.net/ (3) DESCRIPTION: From the web site: "slrn ('S-Lang read news') is a newsreader, i.e. a program that accesses a newsserver to read messages from the Internet News service (also known as 'Usenet'). It runs in console mode on various Unix-like systems (including Linux), 32-bit Windows, OS/2, BeOS and VMS. Beside the usual features of a newsreader slrn supports scoring rules to highlight, sort or kill articles based on information from their header. It is highly customizable, allows free key-bindings and can easily be extended using the sophisticated S-Lang macro language. Offline reading is possible by using either slrnpull (shipped with slrn) or a local newsserver (like leafnode or INN)." I have used several newsreaders over the last 10+ years on Solaris, Linux, and Windows operating systems and slrn and Xnews are the two newsreaders that I still prefer. The nice thing about slrn is ist can be used in console mode which comes in handy over a ssh (secure shell) connection. -- Frank Hahn
From: Frank Hahn on 17 Sep 2009 23:30 (1) PROGRAM NAME: Servant Salamander (2) LINK: http://www.altap.cz/download.html#salrel (3) DESCRIPTION: From web site: "Servant Salamander 1.52 is the last freeware version of our file manager (you can use it free of charge). This program was not updated since 1998. We recommend to use current version of Altap Salamander on newer operating systems (Windows XP and Vista)." This is still my favorite two-paned file manager. It's quick, portable, and I have used it on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 without difficulties. I have tried many other file managers and the only other one I prefer is Midnight Commander (typically found in Linux/UNIX systems even though I have seen Windows binaries). -- Frank Hahn
