I've been fighting this too, and it appears that upgrading to the
latest hplip (3.10.2) and then reinstalling the printer should fix
it.

I upgraded to hplip-3.10.2, and the problem was the same.
I downgraded to ghostscrip-8.70 and it works fine for me.
