From: Homer on 11 Feb 2010 18:41 Thanks for all of your help on this problem. I downloaded IE8 on all 3 of my machines following all of your instructions. The day following my installation on one of my machines I started having NAV launch on the desktop by itself. I've several chat sessions with Symantec with no resolution. They seem to think that the problem is that I have email protection turned off. I've always had it turned off on all my machines without a problem. This started to happen after I installed IE8. Is there possibly some connection? Email scanning provides no additional protection and even Symantec has said that it's not necessary: <QP> Disabling Email Scanning does not leave you unprotected against viruses that are distributed as email attachments. Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect scans incoming files as they are saved to your hard drive, including email and email attachments. Email Scanning is just another layer on top of this. To make sure that Auto-Protect is providing the maximum protection, keep Auto-Protect enabled and run LiveUpdate regularly to ensure that you have the most recent virus definitions. </QP> http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav.nsf/docid/2002111812533106 > ...This started to happen after I installed IE8. From: Homer on 13 Feb 2010 15:33 The machine that it happens on is a Dell laptop running windows XP All 3 of my machines are running NAV and the subscriptions and updates are all current. I didn't have any trial anti-virus installed on any of them. It's just odd that this started happening right after I installed IE8. I orginally misspoke. NAV launches and the window is minimized on the task bar. I really don't think it has anything to do with email protection. I've had it turned on and it is still launching. From: PA Bear [MS MVP] on 13 Feb 2010 18:15 1. Download the Norton Removal Tool, saving it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe 2. Close any open applications (i.e., anything with an icon on the taskbar). 3. After making certain you have a copy of your Product Key handy, uninstall NAV & LiveUpdate via Add/Remove Programs & reboot. 4. IMPORTANT! => Make certain that the Windows Firewall is enabled. NB: You're "working without a net" now: Don't to ANYTHING else online (e.g., browsing; reading email; chatting) until you've completed Step #7 below! 5. Double-click on the file you saved in Step #1 above to run the utility. Don't TOUCH your keyboard until the run completes, then reboot again. 6. Do a clean install of NAV 2010 using your Product ID & reboot: http://www.symantec.com/norton/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20080514162318EN TIP: Do not enable or install any Norton Add-ons (e.g., Norton Anti-Phishing) just yet. 7. Manually and repeatedly run LiveUpdate until you get a "no more updates" prompt. 8. Test. Thanks again for all your help on this problem. I followed your instructions to the letter and I'm still having the problem. I just find it hard to believe that this doesn't have something to do with the installation of IE8. It started happening right after I installed it. Thanks again. I appears that I'm just going to have to live with this. "PA Bear [MS MVP]" wrote: > 1.
