Get at least two backup devices - you shouldn't rely on just one (and
then you can leave 'em plugged in too).

They just bought a new laptop and an external hdd; they aren't going to
invest in new hardware. Anyway, they /have/ two backups: the one on the
laptop and the one the external hdd. The latter doesn't need to be
plugged in all the time; the hdd of the laptop is large enough.
