I tried all the well-known alternatives to TreePad years ago, didn't
like any of them, and have stuck with TreePad despite its annoying
quirks and lack of support for the rich text format. Does anyone know
of newer freeware programs similar to TreePad which do support RTF and
work well?

I've used Jarte for 3-4 years and like it a lot for RTF. I especially
like its superb printing support which allows you to adjust page width
and margins etc before printing to get the best printed appearance.

BUT Jarte is a rather odd looking program which I'm sure is not to
everyone's taste: http://www.jarte.com/index.html

5 pages here using the search criteria > tree.

Put in other words in search at the bottom of the page if needed.

Rather than RTF I would suggest HTML might be a better choice. If for any
reason you need to separate the content from the formatting (e.g. extract
text) it's much easier to do with HTML than RTF. RTF also doesn't handle
graphics well. It stores graphics in bitmapped form so that your files will
grow to ginormous sizes if you intend to add graphics to your articles. It
doesn't handle tables well at all either -- a consideration if you'll be
adding information in such a format.

If you go the html route then I could recommend NetPicker to you. I think
the url is:
www.netpicker.net

It's freeware, but must have been shareware at some point in the past, as
the help file still refers to it as such.

Also, someone in this ng recently discovered another brilliant html /
tree-based info organizer, but, unfortunately, I can't recall the name. It
was a thread that appeared about two to three weeks ago. You'll have to hunt
it down but I recall looking at it and being impressed.

Well now...here I go on the other side of the fence. I think there is a
distinction between word processors and notepad type programs. Can
notepad type programs near the features of a word processor..sure. Some
word processors are nearer a notepad they are so lite...sure! If you
really want or need the power of a full blown word processor, a notepad
type program won't cut it...even the near the features of a word processor
won't do. In my mind there is a distinctive distinction. We shall call
that a DD.
