This actually applies to Windows Servers as well as Windows XP. As happens,
as updates are downloaded and applied, the size of the Windows folder
continues to grow with $NtUninstallKB..... files and a folder $hf_mig$.

I generally delete the $NtUninstallKB... folders after awhile, but is it
safe to delete old KB folders in the $hf_mig$ folder. Is there a setting
somewhere that will purge things here as space is needed?

No, leave the $hf_mig$ alone. On servers that are really tight on space, I
copy the $NTUninstallKB folders to an external USB drive, then I delete them
from the server. That way, I can uninstall those patches in the future if
the need arises (assuming I have enough disk space on the server to copy
them back and then do the uninstall). No 'setting' that I know of that will
'purge' things.

As always, thanks for the reply. Any other suggestions if a SBS is running
short on drive c:. I have moved the Exchange database, client programs, ....
all over to one of the data drives on the server.

Curse the day when MFGRs thought it was OK to send out a preinstalled server
w/ only a 12 GB OS partition. Must be time to redo.

Hi Bob:

12 is a bit light. Most folks suggest using a disk partitioning utility
to reallocate some space to the system partition. the only officially supported
method is to use backup and restore, but the imaging and partitioning utililities
seem to work ok.

Have you seen my missive on moving things. Search for freeing up space
on drive C, or post back and I will put it up again.

If you're at the point where removing updates and SP uninstall files is
useful to you, you are woefully in need of increasing the size of that
drive. If you don't have at least 15% free space, you can't even do a defrag
effecitvely, and your pagefile is probably struggling to keep up.
Drives are so cheap these days that IMO there is no excuse to not get a
larger drive and clone your OS to it. I have a few unique applications, but
I have 50 Gig avalable for my OS drive and it's not all that much extra
space. It's hovering around 30% right now. I've also maxxed out RAM to stop
most use of the pagefile, and placed the pagefile on another physical drive
that has lots of room. I'd think you'd at least want 500 Gig or maybe only
360 Gig of drive space, but ... you sure do need a larger boot drive!
