John,

RP3 for Vulcan (which can be called by VO in exactly the same way) has PDF support and works very well. MIssed you at Devfest this year. I did a session where I showed the new version of RP.

Regards,

Willie

Tim,

Actually you are wrong on several fronts. First, there is no real
performance difference between RP2 and RP3 that we can detect. I am not
sure how you could prove otherwise. Most of the reports I've had to deal
with show up in the viewer in under 1 second so how can anything be
detectably faster. Secondly, I can have PDF with RP2 (and do) so where
is the benefit from it being in RP3? But hand coded reports are simply
critical and the kludgey work arounds for RP3 are a total nuisance. Code
integration is horrendously complex compared with RP2.

The move to OCX and classmate was a disaster on both fronts. We get far
more 5333 with the OCX version and it is a pain to implement in normal
VO code. RP2 was just there, it was pure VO code and could be easily
extended. Extending RP3 is beyond the average VO coder so no, it is not
a brilliant piece of software, it was a serious miscalculation and a
poor business decision.

And the evidence is very loud. Very few people chose to move to RP3 (the
forum has been full of complaints over the years) and many of those who
did move seriously regret it.

Erik,

The fact remains that RP2 is fast enough so what does 'fast' really
mean?

However, the chief concern I have is that RP2 was VO code using the VO
GUI classes. We could easily extend it to make it do what we wanted and
integrate it directly into our application class framework. We cannot do
this with RP3 as he has basically changed the entire data access layer
and of course made it based on Classmate. Finally, the OCX'ification
made it much harder to class-integrate his code back into an
application.

Sorry, but RP2 is superior for us on just so many fronts.
We will not deal with RP3, especially as our new stuff goes to RS
anyhow.

Hi Geoff,

I work with RP3 every day. Suggest you check out the features of RP3.
It is well worth the effort.

The trouble is I haven't used RP2 for years, simply because RP3 is so
much better. Hence many of the finer details are lost in the anals of
time. However, the three fold speed improvement IS real. The Classmate
origins does have an effect, but I suspect that Larry learnt much for
RP2.

For example, we had a statement report that was producing a 10MB
temporary file size for every statement. Not a problem with one
statement, but it was with a run of 1,000. RP3 reduced the temp file
to an insignificant size.

5333 errors are pretty rare and can always be traced back to me, not
RP3.

If you are worried about the OCX, a DLL interface has been written.

Some of our group are Crystal experts and swear by it. For me, RP3 is
a major tool, and serious database development would be much harder
without it.

Hi Willie,

Haven't gone for Vulcan until RP becomes available.
