I rarely alter the settings, but what happens if you crank the quality
setting up to max? Apart from it taking about three years to finish,
presumably.

Yes - I used it to get a DVD (from a DVD recorder) on to my mac, and
when I'd finished doing the editing I wanted and burnt a new DVD, ther
was a marked degradation. It was atrocious! So i gave up.

The Handbrake people themselves strongly recommend against using Handbrake
for this, specifically because of the loss of quality:

They recommend using MPEG-Streamclip. But that doesn't preserve chapter
marks, AFAICS.

Converting to DV does make more sense. You could always ask the MPEG
Streamclip guys if they could add support for chapter markers.

Exporting to .mp4 then re-importing directly does indeed degrade the quality
considerably, and I have written to squared5 to see if they will add support
to MPEG-Streamclip.

I'm also trying reconverting the .mp4 back to .dv before burning, which may
help (though I doubt it). There's also a company called iskysoft, who sell
lots of conversion-type software, and I've written to them to see if they
sell anything that will help.
