I have only used VLC to reformat movies for viewing on my iPod, but you
may find their online manual semi-helpful. It is for VLC-for-Windows,
but I was able to adjust the instructions for Mac.

So you want to copy the video, not all the disk. You're original post wasn't
clear on that.

I use Handbrake, mainly because it can convert the video for iPhone use.
It's slow but does the job for me.

Hold up, y'all. VLC now uses VLC for decryption on some of the DVDs.
That is, the encrypted ones.
