From: SuperGumby [SBS MVP] on 13 Apr 2010 08:24 Leythos, I admit I wanted to 'slap you around', OK. We don't agree about everything but we have also known (of) each other long enough that I do not think there should be any 'bad air' for such slapping. AU is not the only part of the planet that has limitations on internet usage, and US is not the only region of participation in this group. I think poorly of _anyone_ who takes the attitude 'well if it ain't good enough, pay for more' without knowing all the facts. The OP may be from Lower Biddleonia and his, quite succesful, company paying a small fortune for dialup over 30Km's of fence wiring. You point out MSUpdates (significant), WSUS (which is the same thing), DNS queries (trivial _bytes_, not K's nor megs)and AntiVirus updates (which seems in fact to be the OP's problem) in a way that suggests 'validation' of this idea of 'unlimited resources' for internet. I've been harrassing fat lazy programmers for many years for publishing 'updates' that are in fact whole replacements of programs, including the re-publishing of existing libraries. 'the day SG saved AU internet' comes to mind, SQL Dev stuffed up a release to WSUS and by my (very rough) estimation it caused WSUS servers in AU to request the data from a stack of CD's about a mile high to come across the AU pipes. I can't remember the name of the 'internet performance monitoring' organisation but AU's index went from a steady 8-9 out of 10 to 2-3 for a period of several days. Of course, meanwhile ALL of US and everybody else who has this unlimited fast internet facility SUCKED THE MS (and akamai?) SERVERS DRY(a good thing for the rest of us, it limited how quickly our connections were exhausted, 'coz the servers couldn't keep up). point being that this 'I've got a big pipe' attitude really SUX. 'nother anecdote. CEO of a company called me a while ago (few years ago now, not qute dialup days, slow broadband), 'why is our internet slow?'. I spent 3 days walking around the office checking PC's against firewall logs and finally threw up my hands and walked into his office, 'stuffed if I know'. Looking at his PC I asked 'what's that icon in the system tray?' to be told it was BBC radio, when he had other things to do he muted it, my bill for the investigation stopped that practice. We had excluded firewall logging of his PC at his request. point being many people waste whatever pipe they have. Being in an area and situation that makes it important for me to consider 'do I really need Windows Server 3000 betas now, or can I do it next week?' I am _necessarily_ aware of such things. I think there's more I wanted to say but it's been a long day and I still have work to do. People buying a T1, won't let us lock down their networks, then wonder why things are slow outside the network.... When you show them the logs and how 20 people are listening to "Internet Radio", how people are watching Video's online, how some are using personal SIP devices..... My using more than 6GB per day isn't an "attitude", it's a fact, and I've got several customers that use that amount for real business all the time. Since we don't know the full business needs, didn't know the location, and we don't have much in the way of details, it's a valid concern, a 6GB monthly limit. Here in the USA, Verizon wireless use to offer Unlimited Data for connecting laptops to your cell phone for internet connections, cost about $15/month. About a year ago they changed the program to 5GB/month for $15/month and $0.50 per MB after that - what a crock. I've seen networks chew up 5GB in a single day because of malware, because of ISO imaged being downloaded for MS Office 2007 that was purchase as part of the Volume License.... I have one customer that has DSL, 256k/256k, and they can't RWW into their own server let alone workstations because of the performance - my first comment was "GET A BIGGER PIPE"..... They opted to just to just not remotely connect, but they complain about their internet being slow and that some emails (they can't remember the connection between email with and without attachments) take a LONG time to receive or send.... I have sympathy for any area that has a XGB limit per month, what a terrible position to be in for anyone. -- You can't trust your best friends, your five senses, only the little voice inside you that most civilians don't even hear -- Listen to that. From: SuperGumby [SBS MVP] on 13 Apr 2010 10:57 it's almost as insulting as the original statement ain't it? You poor pathetic bandwidth and 'allowance' limited fool. ;-) "Duncan McC" <hard(a)work.ok> wrote in message news:MPG.262f3f53b124fc47989b59(a)news.microsoft.com... > In article <MPG.262e3104fccadce298a2cf(a)us.news.astraweb.com>, > spam999free(a)rrohio.com says... > > <snip> > >> I have sympathy for any area that has a XGB limit per month, what a >> terrible position to be in for anyone. > > Welcome to planet Earth (excluding America) > > :) > > > -- > Duncan.
