From: David Tyler on 1 Feb 2010 08:22 Hello all, I've been away from this group for most of the last 10 years, whilst I have been living in the USA. Now I'm back, and my first posting is the predictable one: I forgot to switch the PSU back to 230v before plugging in my trusty Sawtooth G4; there was a pop and a faint smell of burning and the computer no longer powers up. It looks like a replacement PSU would cost more than my valuation of the machine; is there any reasonable possibility that I could effect a repair myself? Is there a fuse that might have blown, rather than the whole damn thing?

I see - perhaps you should learn about the application of the smiley? The thing is that it's impossible on Usenet to pick up on the normal cues of facial expression and tone of voice (etc) that would tell someone in real life that you were joking, so it's necessary to use some other means of flagging dead-pan humour. The reason for that can be illustrated using this thread as an example: While *you* knew you were joking, I thought you might merely have been stupid and ignorant. If you'd added the smiley, I wouldn't have made that mistake. I still can't see any actual *joke* in progress, but I can accept that you had humorous intent and so are not guilty of idiocy and ignorance (in this case, anyway - we're all idiots from time to time).
