Look at who owns Firefox.app. It's probably (though might not be*) your admin account. You should be able to do updates from there. Reason: FF greys out the update button if it doesn't have write access to the application bundle (or relevant part of it?). * if you originally installed FF under an unprivileged account, the installation will have asked you for an admin username/password combination, but the file will be owned by the user doing the installation. -- Paul Sture

You would probably need to ask in an > OS/2 newsgroup, unless someone else has input. This is an Intel iMac 17 inch (very early one, which may have something to do with this, if latest FF updates do not apply to early Intels) running OS X 10.6.2 running Firefox 3.5.2 and also running Parallels Desktop 4.0 running eComstation 2.1 (OS/2 4.5) running Pronews/2 1.60 and Firefox 1.5. My question applies to FF 3.5.2 under OS X. > If this is on Mac OS X, while it is very easy to disable automatic > updating, I don't knwo of a way to disable the Help>>Check for updates > dialog. I went searching through the FF menus to make sure that automatic updating wasn't turned off, but couldn't find the option. Where is it? And Help/Check for updates is grayed out. -- John Varela Trade NEWlamps for OLDlamps for email

There are only three accounts on this machine, Guest, mine and admin, and Help/Check for Updates is grayed out in both my account and the admin account. > Reason: FF greys out the update button if it doesn't have write access > to the application bundle (or relevant part of it?). > > * if you originally installed FF under an unprivileged account, the It's been so long ago that I don't recall from which account it was installed, but most likely it was my user account. > installation will have asked you for an admin username/password > combination, but the file will be owned by the user doing the > installation. I have been getting regular updates to FF, the last one, it seems to me, just two or three weeks ago. -- John Varela Trade NEWlamps for OLDlamps for email

The automatic updates pref is set here: Firefox>>Preferences>>Updates Check the boxes as you want Firefox to check for updates. As far as Help>>Check for updates being greyed out, I really don't know. Try starting in Safe Mode (Close FF, hold down the Option key while clicking the Dock icon.) If that doesn't work, create a new profile. Close FF, and open Terminal, sand run the following command: /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin -profilemanager If it doesn't work, try removing -bin form the above command. Is the optsion still greyed out in the new profile? Lee

Evidence: Firefox 3.5.5 released - 2009-11-05 Firefox 3.5.4 released - 2009-10-27 Firefox 3.5.3 released - 2009-09-09 I've given up with 'em <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=318855> first raised 2005-12-02 <https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=407875> first raised 2007-12-11 These people have access to budgets in the millions, and they still can't get a simple thing like notification of a new version right. I personally don't need automatic updates, but I would like announcements of new releases, rather than finding out via the online IT press. -- Paul Sture
