Ah, well I did have to download an update from HP so I could use the
scanner on my HP 4580 with 10.6 [1], but that has been replaced anyway
since 10.6 came out, so I'd expect a new scanner to work off the shelf.

[1] Something I only discovered a few weeks ago as rarely use it

Yes, even OS X 10.6 with its many many pre-loaded printer drivers has a
problem with dead printers! Perhaps she's been listening to people in the "OS
X 10.6 doesn't support dead printers" newsgroup - right bunch of grumblers in
there!
