From: Christophe CHESNEAU on 13 Apr 2010 14:23 Hello, I have a forest and a domain with 3 Windows 2003 Server DCs. In order to make a test during 2 weeks, I have to install and promote a Windows 2008 Server R2 into DC (without particulary role). I know I will have to do an ADPREP with the W2K8 R2 DVD but forest and domain will not change their level. 2 weeks after I will retrograde the server as member and suppress it from the network (It will leave only W2K3 severs). Do you know if there could be a problem for the AD architecture ? Thanks in advance. Christophe
From: Ken on 13 Apr 2010 15:45 Hello, After preparing the schema you should be able to promote the Windows 2008 server without any problems. Take the usual precautions of running utilities like dcdiag, etc to make sure Active Directory is happy BEFORE you start testing. Make sure DNS and any pre-existing replication issues are handled before promoting the 2008 DC. After that you should be fine for your testing. After your testing, it should not be a problem to run dcpromo again and demote that 2008 DC to a member server. Just remember that if you have transferred any roles to the 2008 DC that you transfer them back to your 2003 DCs before demoting it. I am primarily speaking of the FSMO roles. But this obviously applies to other roles such as Global Catalog, DNS, etc. After demoting the DC, run dcdiag to make sure your domain is running without problems. You may also want to look at your replication topology to make sure that the replication links are updated and no longer trying to replicate with the 2008 DC. This can be quickly determined by using the Active Directory Sites and Services tool. Including these steps is a more cautious approach and will help you spot any problems before they grow larger than they need. -- Ken Aldrich Senior Support Engineer Visual Click Software 512-231-9990 x 2 mailto:supportw(a)visualclick.com[/email]
