But having said that:

my Virgin Mobile cheapo lets me receive emails at

0123456789(a)virgin.mobile.ca

where those numbers are replaced by my phone number. Your friend's plan
may have the same faciity.

Using Skype with a "Skype Out" credit account works really well. SMS
from your computer, with replies made to your cell phone. Text messages
sent via Skype out are generally cheaper that what you would pay with a
pre-paid phone account.

See: <http://www.skype.com/intl/en/allfeatures/sms/>

But for alternatives, Google "sms to email", you should get several
million hits ;-)

I would give callwave.com a shot. I use the no-fee version and all my
sms text messages accrue on their site and I can easily access them
with my phone turned off, as it is about 85% of the time. I can also
send messages from there or by using callwave's widget. I usually use
the latter which you can find here:

It seems like there are a lot of options for sending text messages on a
Mac but I can't seem to find one that allows you to receive text
messages. I'll keep looking though.
