"Microsoft is killing off its newsgroups and encouraging users to move to
forums instead.

The software giant has over 2,000 public groups covering its various
products, as well as 2,200 private groups for the likes of Microsoft
resellers. But from June 2010 these will be moved to revamped forums on
TechNet, MSDN and Microsoft Answers."

They spent some of last year writing a forum<-->NNTP gateway (only
slightly broken), I wonder if that includes the new "revamped" ones?

Seems like a common trend. Adobe dropped usenet access to their forums
last year against protest from a lot of regular, high-profile
contributors.

The new forums are dog slow and just painful to use in general.

That's certainly the impression you get at first.

Apparently though it's all the fancy css and javascript stuff they load
up front.

Sometimes the browser crashes half way during typing a post; must be the
WYSIWIG editor - talk about useless features.
