That's encouraging

Seems it's a stroke of luck that the 4870 has the 32bit and 64bit EFI so
it'll work in 1st gen *and* later Pros.

My Pro is a 2nd gen - I think I'll start a thread about the GTX 285 in
the hope someone will have one in use.

They're rather fiddly though as they're so close together and if you've
got an audio splitter plugged into the headphone socket it gets rather
crowded...

Ah, but it's the added carpet that clobbers the higher frequency
components that make the noise really /really/ annoying rather than just
really annoying.

I first played the trick on an old external HDD - a cunningly ducted
carpet plinth (nothing but carpet and Copydex, with ducts, honest) for
air intake and outflow; and internal application of sound deadening foam
did wonders.

Yeah, I had one of them.

The replacement fans had a less intrusive noise, but not much quieter, I
always thought - main fan and replacement CPU (with two fans built in),
yeah?

Not necessarily in the next room - I seriously considered putting mine
in a carpet-lined box, but the effort involved in arranging for a decent
quiet external blower to maintain air flow struck me as too much to
bother with.

Good-oh. Mine worked (mostly) until one day the graphics card fan
packed up and took out a CPU and lots of RAM in the process, who knows
how?

Thanks all for the info on 4870 in 1,1. Encouraging. I'll go looking
for one - maybe one will crop up on eBay or some such sometime soon.
Springing 250 for a card from Apple itself seems alot...
